Updated BespokeGun Recoil System

How we reinvented it from the ground up.

Constructively set kinematics of the shot

When firing, the rifle begins to move before the bullet leaves the barrel.

It is at this point that the main error occurs: the position of the weapon changes, the support conditions are different each time, and the repeatability of the series is disrupted.

Typically, this problem is attempted to be "solved" by the shooter through grip, hold, and technique. The BespokeGun recoil system takes a different approach: the behavior of the rifle should be determined by the design rather than the individual.

The main idea

Recoil is not a side effect of a shot. It is a mechanical movement that can be defined by geometry.

The purpose of the recoil system is to ensure a strictly linear movement of the rifle along the axis of the barrel without any rotational components. Fluctuations, skew, and lateral yaw are considered to be a result of incorrect kinematics rather than an inevitable feature of shooting.

If the weapon does not move in a straight line, it is a design error rather than a characteristic of shooting.

Why does a shot error occur?

n the "traditional" scheme:

part of the load is taken by the shooter,
part - the supporting medium,
part - elastic elements.

As a result, each shot occurs in new conditions. Even with the same aiming, the geometry of the system at the moment of the shot differs: the angle changes, the point of contact and the nature of the return to the line of sight. The recoil system solves exactly this problem - not to stabilize the weapon, but to make the movement predictable.

Principle of operation

The whole scheme is built as a kinematic system with separation of functions.

The front support sets the basic geometry and fixes the initial position.
The rear support accompanies the movement and holds the trajectory.
The shooter does not participate in the control of the recoil.

The weapon should not be “held” when fired, but should move along a predetermined line.

Movement requirements

The recoil system must ensure:

linear movement along the axis of the barrel;
no rotation of the weapon;
no jerks or jams;
the same behavior from shot to shot;
return to the aiming line without correction.

Any parasitic movements — vertical, lateral, or rotational — are eliminated by the geometry of the components, rather than by the shooter's technique.

Why are elastic elements excluded?

Springs, rubber and dampers accumulate energy and return it in different ways. This makes the recoil non-repeatable: each shot has a slightly different character of movement.

Therefore, in the recoil system:

there are no damping materials,
there are no elements that work as a shock absorber,
there is no need to "catch" the rifle.

The recoil should not be suppressed, but controlled.

Modular architecture

The system is built as a set of independent nodes.

Each element performs a specific mechanical function and can be used separately.

The main groups of modules include:

the front support medium (mat-bag, front support module);
the bipod nodes and support elements (ski, tips, base extension);
rigidly fixed attachment interfaces;
forward support point;
rifle linear movement module;
rear support ski and rear support medium.

Modularity allows you to implement the system in stages and customize the geometry for a specific rifle and shooting conditions without having to modify the existing equipment.

How does the BespokeGun system differ from conventional solutions?

They usually try to ensure accuracy

by using the shooter's skill,
holding stiffness,
and damping.

Here, the approach is different: accuracy is ensured by the repeatability of the mechanics of the shot.

The shooter is responsible for aiming. The design is responsible for the behavior of the weapon.

Summary

he BespokeGun recoil system is a structurally defined kinematic scheme that provides a linear and repeatable movement of the rifle when fired along the axis of the barrel. The recoil is not suppressed or compensated. It occurs along a predetermined trajectory and does not depend on the shooter's actions.

In upcoming publications, we will show real system configurations, module compatibility, and examples of operation on various rifles.
