Why is barrel break-in necessary?
With any manufacturing technology, irregularities can remain inside any barrel, which are easily visible through a borescope. The more irregularities inside the barrel, the faster it becomes copper-fouled during shooting. The amount of copper inside the barrel and the quality of its inner surface determines not only the time and effort spent on cleaning it, but also affects shooting accuracy and the amount of harmful substances penetrating the metal structure and contributing to its corrosion. The main purpose of break-in is to eliminate scoring in the barrel bore without damaging the rifling itself.
There are several methods of barrel break-in. As a rule, barrel break-in consists of repeatedly following the procedure: shoot, clean, inspect with a borescope.
A broken-in barrel is subsequently easier to clean, reaches its working velocities, and demonstrates its optimal grouping and accuracy.
Barrel tuning is the selection of the optimal ammunition recipe for the available components: powder, bullet, case, primer. This requires certain knowledge, experience, and equipment. In this way, the firearm will demonstrate its maximum capabilities in terms of grouping and accuracy.
Why do we at BespokeGun break in and tune new barrels?
Some barrels are tuned right away, while others require more work. It is rare, but it does happen that a barrel cannot be tuned at all. It shows poor grouping or consistently produces flyers. There can be a multitude of reasons: improper barrel break-in (damaged), incorrectly selected reloading components, errors in the cartridge recipe, defects in the barrel itself or other components of the shooting system: bolt group, bedding. Identifying and eliminating one or more causes is often not straightforward.
At BespokeGun, we mandatorily provide barrel break-in and tuning services for various bullet types. We also strongly recommend this service for additional barrels. Only in this way do we guarantee the stated performance characteristics of the shooting system and confirm this with the customer prior to finalization (shooting acceptance service) active link. We also confirm the functionality of the accessories we recommend as part of the shooting system: muzzle brake, closed-type muzzle brake, bipod, riflescope, mount, and others.
As a result, you receive:
· a guaranteed fully functional carbine or barrel;
· no need to spend time and consumables on break-in;
· no need to spend time troubleshooting if the barrel cannot be tuned;
· along with the product, you receive a ready-made recipe for self-loading ammunition;
· the barrel is confirmed to be functional, broken in, tuned, and has reached its working velocities — no need to adjust the ammunition recipe;
· there is an understanding of the functionality of the agreed-upon and guaranteed working accessories;
How much does it cost?
The cost of this service consists of the cost of ammunition for barrel break-in/tuning, the specialist's labor, and the rental of a lane at the shooting range. This is the minimum expenditure that would be incurred when tuning independently, provided one has the knowledge, experience, and expensive equipment. In addition, the most valuable resource — time — is saved.
What if the user wants to break in and tune the shooting system themselves?
As mentioned above, we always tune barrels as part of the carbine — this service is mandatory, and we strongly recommend it when purchasing an additional barrel.
Only in this way can we confirm the stated accuracy characteristics. Accuracy is confirmed by four series of three consecutive shots, and if even one group does not meet our accuracy requirements, the product is reworked and tuned again.
Only in this way is it possible to identify — rare as it may be — defects or non-conformities in all components of the shooting system: barrel, stock, bolt group, scope mount, riflescope, ammunition, muzzle device, and shooter errors.
In the event that the user chooses to tune their system themselves, we sign a document waiving subsequent claims regarding the rifle's accuracy parameter, except for warranty cases in accordance with the terms of the rifle's warranty service.
Is it possible to order this service at a later date if the rifle cannot be tuned?
As already mentioned, improper break-in and operating conditions can irreversibly degrade the barrel's characteristics or damage it completely.
In this case, the procedure for contacting the company is as follows:
· a repair referral is obtained;
· barrel diagnostics are paid for;
· the system is handed over to the company for an expert assessment of the possibility of tuning the system;
· if the assessment is positive, payment for the service is made and the system is tuned;
· if the barrel can no longer be tuned, a barrel replacement is possible at the company's current price list;
